A domain name extension is then end part of the domain name. For example "example.com" the extension is ".com". It was designed to be used to group domains into categories. This is somewhat true as some extensions are only allowed to be registered under certain criteria which is governed by different organizations that allow the registration for the domains. An extension must be also included when registering for a domain name. Popular domain extensions are .com, .net., org and .info.
